The Art of No Pan

WE CRY NO PAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!!

No Punch (ノーパンチ) or No Pan (ノーパン) in short is a term originating from japan. It basically means not attacking the opponent.

No Pan can refer to situations such as not using your SIGNI to attack despite having an open hole or not attacking to ener starve from the start of the game.

A question that often gets asked is this:

If we do not damage the opponent and clear their life cloth, how do we win the game?

While it is true that you need to punch damage in to win the game, there are other factors that may affect the timing you inflict such damages. We will look at some examples on when No Pan is used.

The main reason why No Pan is used is to deny resources, particularly ener. If one does not attack, the SIGNI the opponent has cannot be turned into Ener. Neither would their Life Cloth give them ener through being crushed. As such, the opponent may end up having a lack of ener to retaliate and deal damage to you.

One might ask what difference does it make attacking later and now? The difference lies in the amount of effort the opponent needs to put in to clear your SIGNIs. While a battle between 2 normal level 4/5 deck make No Pan seem almost meaningless, the effects of No Pan can be seen more significantly against the more time sensitive 2 stop decks.

2 stop decks generally rely on using cards that can clear low power or level SIGNIs in order to push damage in fast, but this is usually paired with some ener cost. By not giving them the ener to push harder, one can safely reach level 4 and above to board high level and power SIGNI, making it harder for the opponent to clear these SIGNIs. In a sense, No Pan offers security for your deck to reach level 4 and stabilize.

While not as prevalent in today's meta due to the increase in quality of Alfou's cards. No Pan was a very important technique in fighting against Alfou back in 2016. By giving Alfou ener through attacking her, she can easily loop Violence Jealousy and Skanda along with Heike to easily clear low power SIGNIs and push damage in scarily fast. However if one would to ener starve her via No Pan, she would have to burn her own resources using cards like Baobaboon in order to do the same thing. And if one were to reach 4 and board high power SIGNIs, the amount of resources required to clear such SIGNIs using Heike and Violence Jealousy would increase, making it harder for Alfou to clear them.

Imagine hitting your opponent's life and he bursts this.

By not attacking early, you can also eliminate the chances of disruptive bursts from affecting you. This is especially important if your hand isn't stable enough and filled with a lot of high level SIGNIs early game.

If the opponent were to burst something like "Trash a SIGNI" on your field while you do not have any other SIGNIs to wall the next turn, you may potentially be leaving 3 extra empty SIGNI zones for the opponent to attack when its their turn. As such you can see how No Pan can offer stability to the player.

No Pan can also be seen in Key Selection through The Twister.
Since most cards in this deck trashes opponent SIGNIs, The Twister's deck can afford not attacking early on, instead slowly depleting the opponent's hand and life once they reach 5 through Arc Energe and the Twister's own effect.

No Pan are also often employed by decks that can easily kill their opponent from very high life count. Decks such as Guzuko and Become You Tama (Dash Tama) often do not attack in order to deny the opponent from gaining ener to potentially open ARTS or SIGNI effects that can potentially stop their big turns. Such deck can afford to No Pan as they can easily deal lethal damage from very high life cloth counts.

One of Key Selection's terror decks.
Fortunately the deck is stopped by Mayu's Room.

If one has cards that can control the ener zone, they can also make a deck around it by using No Pan. One such deck is The Twister along with Echidona. By grow locking the opponent using Echidona and No Pan, the player can grow into The Twister and slowly chip off their opponent's Life Cloth via The Twisters effect while the opponent is stuck at level 2 with no ener to do anything. In fact, because of how obstructive the deck is, it got sent into Mayu's Room (The equivalent of a restriction list in WIXOSS).

Although the above deck isn't playable now, it does shows one way of No Pan being used in this game, prompting future deck possibilities to arise around ener locking.

Since No Pan revolves around not attacking the opponent, Latina makes a very good SIGNI to use in such decks. As you would not be using your LRIG to attack eitherways, you can down your LRIG to activate Latina's effect. This can allow you to disrupt your opponent's hand or even search out combo pieces to end your opponent.

Use the term "No Pan" only on the net
for obvious reasons.

That's about it regarding No Punch, or commonly known as No Pan online. Through this, you can see the importance of controlling when you attack as you can potentially give your opponent the resource to end you.

With this, attack safely and we will see you next time! Happy Batoru-ing!
